วัดนี้ตั้งขึ้นโดยความประสงค์ของพ่อท่านคล้าย (พระครูพิศิษฐ์อรรถการ) บนที่ดินของผู้ใหญ่กลับ งานพร้อม ได้ถวายที่ดินผื่นนี้ให้พ่อท่าน เมื่อวันที่ 17 สิงหาคม 2483 มีเนื้อที่ทั้งหมด 46 ไร่เศษ
อยู่ มาเมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2502 พ่อท่านได้รับกิจนิมนต์ไปที่คว้านพะเยาว์ (จังหวัดพะเยาเดี๋ยวนี้) ในงานได้มีนายประครอง ช่วยพันธ์ ชาวคว้านพะเยาว์ได้นำผอบ (ตลับ) ทองคำมาถวายพ่อท่าน ภายในผอบมีพระธาตุ (พระสารีริกธาตุ) โดยนายประคองเล่าว่าได้ขึ้นไปบนดอย และพบซากปรักหักพังของเจดีย์องค์หนึ่ง เลยขุดดูจึงพบผอบทองคำมีพระธาตุอยู่ภายใน จึงเก็บมาไว้ที่บ้านเพื่อบูชา เกิดมีนิมิตฝันว่า“พระธาตุ” นี้มีเจ้าของ เมื่อพบแล้วให้นำผอบไปให้เจ้าของด้วย โดยบอกลักษณะเจ้าของอย่างละเอียด ลักษณะเจ้าของที่ฝันนั้นตรงกับลักษณะของพ่อท่านทุกประการ พ่อท่านรับผอบแล้ว พ่อท่านเอาแต่พระธาตุอย่างเดียว ส่วนผอบคืนให้นายประคองไป เมื่อพ่อท่านได้พระธาตุแล้ว ได้มาสร้างเจดีย์ขึ้นในที่ดินแปลงนี้ โดยมีพระใบฎีกาครื้น โสภโณ อดีตเจ้าอาวาสวัดจันดีเป็นผู้ดำเนินการก่อสร้าง พ่อท่านได้ลงฤกษ์สร้างเมื่อวันที่ 14 มกราคม 2505 ตรงกับวันอังคาร ขึ้น 9 ค่ำ ปีขาล เป็นเจดีย์สูง 35 วา ฐานสี่เหลี่ยมยาวด้านละ 75 เมตร นับปล่องไฉนได้ 43 ปล่อง
ต่อ มาเถ้าแก่ก้วง ชาวอำเภอหาดใหญ่ จังหวัดสงขลา ได้ทำยอดพระธาตุทำด้วยทองคำ ใช้ทองคำน้ำหนักประมาณ 450 บาท มาถวายพ่อท่าน และได้บรรจุพระธาตุสวมยอดทองคำไว้เรียบร้อย เจดีย์ไม่ทันเสร็จสมบูรณ์ พ่อท่านก็มรณะภาพไป เมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม 2513 เวลา 23.05 น. ที่โรงพยาบาลพระมงกุฎเกล้า กรุงเทพฯ
สถาน ที่นี้จึงเป็นเจดีย์อนุสรณ์สถานพ่อท่านคล้าย วัดนี้ได้รับอนุญาตให้สร้างตามหนังสือของอธิบดีกรมศาสนา เมื่อวันที่ 14 มิถุนายน 2520 และได้รับอนุญาตให้ตั้งวัดได้เมื่อวันที่ 18 สิงหาคม 2520 โดยนายภิญยโญ สาธร รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ ผู้รับสนองพระบรมราชโองการให้ชื่อวัดว่า วัดธาตุน้อย (รองมาจากพระธาตุเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช) ในปีเดียวกันได้ขอพระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมา และได้รับพระบรมราชานุญาต เมื่อวันที่ 6 กันยายน 2522 (ประกาศในพระราชกิจจานุเบกษา ลงวันที่ 6 กันยายน 2522)
ต่อ มาคณะสงฆ์และศิษยานุศิษย์ของพ่อท่านได้อาราธนา นิมนต์พระราชพุทธิรังษีสมัยเมื่อเป็นพระครูพิบูลนวเขต เจาคณะอำเภอฉวาง มาเป็นเจ้าอาวาส ได้ดำเนินการบูรณะเสริมสร้าง เป็นลักษณะของวัดวาอารามโดยสมบูรณ์ตามที่เห็นในปัจจุบันนี้

ตั้งอยู่ในเขต อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาหลวง เรียกชื่อตามลำคลองที่ไหลผ่านหมู่บ้านท่าแพ อยู่ในท้องที่หมู่ที่ 14 ตำบลช้างกลาง กิ่งอำเภอช้างกลาง ห่างจากน้ำตกกะโรมไปประมาณ 6 กิโลเมตร สามารถเดินทางโดยใช้ทางหลวงจังหวัดหมายเลข 4016 ประมาณ 9 กิโลเมตร จะถึงสามแยกบ้านตาลจากนั้นแยกไปทางซ้ายเข้าทางหลวงจังหวัดหมายเลข 4015 ไปอีกประมาณ 29 กิโลเมตร จะถึงทางเข้าน้ำตกท่าแพ ซึ่งอยู่ลึกเข้าไปประมาณ 2 กิโลเมตร น้ำตกท่าแพมีชั้นน้ำตก 10 ชั้น ได้แก่ หนานแพน้อย หนานนางครวญ หนานเตย หนานอ้ายซวย หนานปู หนานไผ่ และหนานน้ำราง ทางอุทยานแห่งชาติเปิดให้ท่องเที่ยวพักผ่อนหย่อนใจเพียง 3 ชั้น สำหรับผู้สนใจศึกษาธรรมชาติทางอุทยานแห่งชาติได้จัดทำเส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาติถึงน้ำตกชั้นที่ 7 แต่ทั้งนี้ต้องอยู่ในความควบคุมดูแลของเจ้าหน้าที่
